An exhibition of paintings and prints, which primarily features wall hangings and etchings, is the work of a city-based couple --- artists Sukka Sunder and Sukka Karuna.

The former artist’s works emphasises on the life of lamb painted in metallic and acrylic colours, projecting the subject on a background of brightcoloured background with disturbing mix of colours. His works speak only of lamb and its surroundings. He explains that involvement of members of the shepherd’s family in taming sheeps for their livelihood had always fascinated him --- and made a deep impact on him to use animal forms as a major shift in his visual language.

One of his works shows a lamb-shaped village filled with greenery on a black background onto which a collage work of mini-sized lambs in different postures are presented in graphical images.

“My creations and its images are a dialogue between my immediate surroundings and me --- which are personalised with an universal artistic appeal,” explains Sunder. While this was about the paintings by Sunder, his better half, Karuna, mostly focuses on prints and etchings. Karuna’s works are mostly etchings of objects like night lamp, cot and absurd prints.

Taking a look at one of her print work on cloth, one finds an empty cot in a rusty brown colour surrounded with bees and insects.

On further observing one finds a pair of feet hanging from top, absurdly making one realise that the print speaks of a suicide. “Household objects, life situations and emotional attachments to the worldly activities become inspirational elements of my prints,” says Sukka Karuna.

The paintings and etchings are available from Rs 8000 to Rs 30,000 and the graphic frames cost Rs 2000 each. The exhibition is open between 11 am to 7 pm till December 4.
