HYDERABAD: Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy on Saturday became the CPI national general secretary, replacing A B Bardhan who held the post since 1997.

The Telanganite was elected unopposed to the post at the party’s conclave in Patna.

Reddy is the second leader from the state to lead the national unit of the CPI with the first being Chandra Rajeswara Rao who served the party as general secretary for 25 years.

Reddy’s election has coming after a long gap since then and is expected give a boost to the party’s pro-Telangana stand.

A student leader in the late 1950’s, Reddy has come a long way to becoming a fullfledged leader.

Born on March 25, 1942, Reddy was a ardent social worker. His father S Venkatrami Reddy was a freedom fighter. He got an LLB degree from Osmania University Law College. He became a member of the CPI national council in 1971 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Nalgonda seat in 1998.
