A classical battle

Express News Service

Bharatnatyam danseuse Savitha Sastry brings to the city her brand of contemporary classical with her stage production of Yudh. Scripted by her husband AK Srikanth and choreographed by her, the production puts forth three perspectives on one simple question – do we really deserve the suffering we endure? A dance that combines the battle between good, evil and mundane existence, embodied through God, Satan and the human, Yudh can perhaps be understood as the struggle to come to terms with life as we experience it.

Having begun her classical training since the age of six, Savitha’s recreation of how the dance is presented has been a talking point in the past two years that she’s begun her creative process. Starting with Music Within in 2010, she then brought Soul Cages to the stage. Yudh, her third creative expression, uses lighting and sound to render an almost cinematic quality to the dance. Taking to the stage solo, it will be interesting to see how she carries the show on her shoulders for an hour and five minutes continuously. Yudh will be staged at Ravindra Bharathi today, 7 pm onwards.
