Parody central

Madhuwanti Saha

For someone who enjoys parodies, TVF (The Viral Fever), launched last February, has parodies, spoofs and originals on youth with their take on society, Bollywood and politics. They described it as ‘Q-tiyapa’ and founder Arunabh Kumar, 29, explains, “Q-tiyapa (derived from a Hindi slang word) is our trademark word that stands for the beauty of insanity.” Recently, based on subscribers, TVF, which is quite popular among students and young professionals, was ranked the biggest youth entertainment channel on YouTube, beating channels like Jai Hind.

Behind the scene

Before TVF, Kumar was in talks with youth entertainment channels a couple of years ago to bring out some shows for the youth. “But it didn’t work out the way we wanted,” says the IIT-Kharagpur alumnus (who worked with Red Chillies), adding that the first idea he pitched was for a show on engineering students and their life and times in a college. But he started working on TVF in 2011 and launched it the next year. It now has a production team of eight professionals who bring out one video every week. The ideas are mostly designed and conceptualised by Kumar.

In the pipeline

Their parodies are based on the latest things doing the rounds in the media. We like their version of Idea’s Honey Bunny commercial which has got around 48,000 views within one week. Another popular one is their parody of 'Ishq Wala Love' from Student of the Year. “We are working on a video based on the rape case that shook India. The approach will be anti-men,” offers the founder, who also plans to make a movie on TVF’s lines this year.
