HYDERABAD: An explosion that ripped apart a chemical factory on the outskirts of Hyderabad killed at least one worker and left many injured some others dead on Tuesday morning.

Eyewitnesses said the worker, yet to be identified, was killed on the spot as the blast ravaged Sai Priya chemical factory at Bacharam on the outskirts of the city. The factory manufactures intermeditary chemicals used in preparing medicines, police said.  It is not yet clear whether it has the permission to manufacture the chemical.

Locals alleged that the factory management shifted the dead person and the injured hurriedly soon after the blast. Dozens of gunny bags containing the chemical substance was also shifted from the premises, locals said.

According to them, the number of deceased could be more than one reported so far.

Police reached the spot and are investigating the cause of the explosion and also the nature of chemicals being produced in the factory.  It is learnt that the factory was sealed away couple of years ago but the management obtained necessary permissions and reopened it a year ago.
