HYDERABAD: If all goes well, animals too would have a crematorium for their decent cremation on the lines of human electrical crematoriums which are functioning in different parts of Greater Hyderabad.
There has been long a pending demand from pet lovers, animal activists and other sections of the society for the need to establish an animal crematorium for giving a decent farewell for dead animals. Disposing off dead pets and animals is not just the concern of few pet lovers alone.
In a city like Hyderabad where the number of pets grow and several of them die everyday, systematic disposal of animal carcass has been an issue of concern for a long time. Often, the dead pets end up rotting in a dumpyard or in landfills.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has drawn plans for setting up animal crematorium at Fathullaguda near Nagole in Rangareddy district and another in Autonagar in the near future.
It is mandatory on the part of the corporation to remove the carcasses of dead animal from the GHMC limits in the interest of public health. Accordingly, all the dead animals are being lifted from different corners of GHMC jurisdiction and are disposed at the dumping yard at Autonagar by deep burial method in an unscientific manner resulting in foul smell and causing hardships to the nearby residents.
Speaking to Express, GHMC chief veterinary officer P Venkateswara Reddy said a five-acre land in Fathullaguda has been acquired by GHMC after winning a legal case in the court a few months ago and would be developed as animal crematorium. The proposed animal crematorium would be first-of-its-kind in the country. The crematorium would be developed in about a year’s time, he added.
