HYDERABAD: In a tragic end to what must have been a pleasant outing, a 22-year-old youth died while attempting to take selfies with his friends at the Dindi project in Gundlapally of Nalgonda district on Saturday evening.

According to police, the victim U Mahesh, 22, a resident of SR Nagar in the city, along with five others, had gone to Srisailam on Friday. After visiting the Srisailam temple, they started their return trip to Hyderabad the next day when they stopped at the Dindi project to spend some time. They went close to the waters to take photos.

This is when Mahesh slipped and fell into the water. His friends started screaming for help and reached out to the police by dialling the emergency number. Locals, along with the cops, launched a search and rescue operation.

Though they later got help from expert swimmers, the rescue operations had to be suspended for the day due to darkness. The body was recovered during the search on Sunday and sent for autopsy. The body was later handed over to his family, police said.
