Metro work: Steps in place to curb traffic

Express News Service

With the construction of the Kochi Metro Rail set to begin on June 7, authorities have stated that steps had already been taken to regulate traffic effectively. According to KMRL, `8 crore has been set aside for the smooth implementation of traffic regulations and to ensure that the traffic flow will not be affected. The contracts for civil works for the construction of via ducts and stations for Kochi Metro Rail were awarded separately for four stretches -- Aluva to Kalamassery, Kalamassery to Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Stadium to Ernakulam South and Ernakulam South to Tripunithura Pettah. Accordingly, Rs 2 crore will be given to each stretch for traffic regulations. Considering the traffic congestion that will arise at the National Highway stretch, the Metro Rail authorities said construction in these areas will begin only after the widening of the road.
