Express News Service

KOCHI:  The use of Tsunami meat (stale meat) is a major threat facing city residents. The meat, which is rotten and unfit for consumption, is used in snacks like cutlets, meat rolls and puffs. The meat is used after grinding in these products, making it difficult to find out whether it is safe or not. The most dangerous among such meat is beef, especially beef liver which is stale and unhygienic.

According to officials, the customer should ensure that the quality of food as well as the hygienic conditions of the eatery is safe, before consuming food items like beef liver and ‘potty’ (the cleaned intestine of animals).

“The liver fry or liver roast, which is in great demand, should be consumed with caution. It is recommended that consumers should make sure of the quality before eating these items. In case they feel any taste difference, the consumers should bring the matter to the notice of the Health Department,” the officials added.

Likewise, ‘potty’ is another item which is usually served in wayside eateries. “It is actually the cleaned intestine of animals. If not cooked properly, it can lead to several infections in human body. ‘Kappa-potty mix’ and ‘Kappa-beef mix’ (Kappa biriyani) are some of the items that are having high demand,” said officials.

Meanwhile, the public is of the opinion that the authorities should provide a helpline number for the public to inform the health officials regarding such instances.

They also demanded that the authorities concerned should carry out frequent raids on ‘thattukadas’ which are having a brisk business, especially during night.
