CB Rules out Foul Play in Death of Maharaja's Student

Express News Service

KOCHI:The Crime Branch (CB) probing the death of a student of Maharaja’s College under suspicious circumstances in May this year has stated that it was a case of suicide by ‘partial hanging’.

Results of forensic examination also revealed that Anuja had committed suicide, and that there was no evidence of any foul play.

However, Crime Branch (District) Assistant Commissioner V Sunil Kumar in his report stated that examination of the cell phone details of the deceased and chemical analysis of viscera and blood were required to be analysed before confirming the suicide.   During the investigation, the police had sought the opinion of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Forensic Medicine HoD Dr P Rema, who said the body had only one ante-mortem injury that was on the neck. Rema also pointed out that the naked eye examination of stomach content did not reveal presence of poison. However, it could be confirmed only after seeing the chemical analysis report.

The police also sought the opinion of Dr B Umadathan, professor of Forensic Medicine at the Amrita Institute of Medical Science (AIMS), Kochi. Umadathan pointed out that there were no injuries on the body, including the neck region, therefore death due to violence/strangulation could be ruled out. “The description of the dead body and the inquest report show that the feet were touching the ground and the legs were slightly bent at the knees, which indicated that it was a case of death by ‘partial hanging’.  The plastic chair found near the dead body could have been used as a stepping device to tie the sari on the fan,” he said.

The crime scene examination report also corroborated partial hanging theory.
