‘Kanthan’, starring Daya Bai, to be released today

KOCHI: Social activist Daya Bai is all geared up to appear on the big screen. She will appear in the lead role in the movie ‘Kanthan- The Lover of Colour’, which will be released on Wednesday at Don Bosco Theatre, Palarivattom. The film is based on the real life of Adivasis in Wayanad.

The 77-year-old portrays the role of Nithyamma, the grandmother of Kanthan, a twelve-year-old orphan. Shareef Easa, director of the film, said the movie was shot in Wayanad itself and it revolves around the emotions of the people living in the Adivasi colonies. “The social theme of the movie revolves around the tribals and the discrimination they face because of their race, colour and creed,” said Shareef.

“This is not a field to look on to, and the present day movies are too time-consuming. The naturality of the characters are lost in the cuts and the retakes that occur in the middle of the film,” said Daya Bai. The film is in the Raoula language spoken by the Adivasis in Wayanad.
