THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State cabinet on Wednesday gave administrative sanction to the revised estimate to the tune of Rs 56 crore for constructing the new bus terminal complex at Thampanoor here.

The project will be executed as a joint venture of KSRTC and the Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation (KTDFC). The construction will be carried out by KTDFC on a Build-Operate-Transfer  basis.

The construction will be funded by KTDFC and after the completion of the work, 50 percent of the revenue generated through rent and other means will be given to KSRTC each month. Once the total expense of KTDFC is met, the complex will be handed over to KSRTC, said Transport Minister Jose Thettayil.

The plan to construct the bus terminal complex is as part of the strategy to pull KSRTC out of the financial crisis. This is the third such initiative being carried out in the State. The other two complexes are coming up at Angamaly and Kozhikode.

The proposed project at Thampanoor comprises a bus station and a commercial complex built in international standards with a floor area of 32,958 sq metres. The 12-storeyed complex, including the basement,  will have a parking facility for 300 cars and for over 1,000 two-wheelers. It will be constructed in such a way that the vehicles can reach up to the third floor.

The eco-friendly building will have 29 bus bays at a stretch. The ground floor will house the bus bays, passenger platform, terminal facilities - including office, enquiry and ticketing, among other things, a central lobby and a commercial area.

Convention centres to organise meetings, conferences and to even hold marriages have been included. The first and second floors will be  commercial areas; with a central lobby on the first floor of the complex. The second floor will also have the facility for parking  cars.

Office spaces will be provided from the fourth floor onwards. There  will also be a 2,000-sq feet administrative block.

Resting place for transport employees will also be constructed on the upper floors.
