Bid to Take Selfie: Girl Drowns, Boy Missing

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A girl drowned and a boy was reported missing when they were swept away by the tide while taking a selfie atop a rock on the Azhimala beach on Wednesday noon.

 The deceased was identified as Sajina, 21, of Punalal, Nedumangad.  Unni, 21, of Marappalam near Pattom, was missing. They were final year BPharm students at a private college in Nedumangad.

 Quoting eyewitnesses, the Vizhinjam Police said the girl slipped into the sea and the boy who jumped to rescue her was also caught in the waves.

 The girl’s body was retrieved around 3 pm by the rescue team comprising the Coastal Police, Coast Guard, Fisheries officials and the locals.

A search operation to retrieve the boy’s body was continuing in the night.

Detained under Goonda Act

The City Police have detained a person accused in several criminal cases under the Goonda Act. Richardson Gomas, 31, of TC 71/3313, near FCI godown, Muttathara, Valiyathura, is being detained under the Act for the second time, said an official release.

 The arrest followed some complaints on his illegal activities at Kuzhivilakam, Sulaiman Theruvu and FCI godown area.  

 The police team was by Shangumugham Assistant Commissioner Jawahar Janardh and included, Poonthura circle inspector S Y Suresh, Valiyathura sub inspector PS Vinod and CPOs Godwin and Arun.
