St Joseph's Lift Capt Harshan Trophy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram, lifted Captain R Harshan memorial all Kerala inter school basketball championship.

The final match was played between St Jopseph’s and Sainik School Kazhakootam the other day. The event is annually sponsored by the old boys’ association of Sainik School to commemorate Capt R Harshan, an alumnus who died fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. St Joseph’s team was presented the trophy and a cash prize of `3,000. The runners up, Sainik School Kazhakootam was awarded a cash prize of `2,000.

Amal Nair of St Joseph’s was adjudged the best player of the tournament. The best defensive player of the tournament was Aman Noyal Mascrene of Sainik School Kazhakootam.

He is also the school cadet captain. Aditya V Nair of Loyola School was adjudged the most promising player of the tournament. Eight schools in and around Thiruvananthapuram participated in this year’s tournament which was its seventh edition.

Capt R Harshan, who hails from Thiruvananthapuram, died fighting terrorists during an army operation in Kupawara on March 20, 2007. The nation honoured him with the Ashok Chakra posthumously, the highest peace time gallantry award.

The seventh edition of the tournament was inaugurated by Capt(IN) Louis George, former president of the old boys’ association, on November 2. Fr Devassy Paul, principal Loyola school, Thiruvananthapuram, was chief guest at the valedictory function and he presented the trophies and medals to the winners. He lauded the sportsman spirit, camaraderie and discipline displayed by all participants.
