Construction Banned on Varkala Cliff

The secretary of Varkala Municipality has been asked not to give permission for shops within 100 metre radius of the cliff.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Thiruvananthapuram District Collector Biju Prabhakar has issued orders banning all construction activities in an area that falls under a 100 metre radius from the Varkala cliff.

Barring activities of the Geological Survey of India, no sort of construction will be permitted along the cliff and the Papanasam beach, the District Collector ordered.

No new construction, extension or repair works should be carried out and police have been directed to take action if any construction is found be in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone notification.

The district administration has asked the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to install sign boards which inform people about the geographical features of the Varkala Cliff.

The GSI, in association with the Archaeology Department, should examine if any buildings are posing a danger to the cliff.

The secretary of Varkala Municipality has been asked not to give permission for shops within 100 metre radius of the cliff.

Vehicles should not be allowed within a radius of 50 metre from the cliff. The district administration has also asked the police to set up aid posts to check any violation. The order is aimed at conserving the cliff and to ensure the safety of people living in the vicinity, the District Collector said.
