‘No helmet, no petrol’ norm in district soon

VIJAYAWADA: In wake of the rising number of road accidents involving motorcyclists, district collector B Lakshmikantham has announced that the administration will implement the ‘no helmet, no petrol’  norm across the district soon.On Thursday, Lakshmikantham conducted a review meeting with police and transport department officials. The police informed the collector that most motorcycle-borne youths killed or injured in road accidents were not wearing helmets. Currently, a fine of `100 is being collected from motorcyclists for not wearing helmets. 

The collector said wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle has been made mandatory and fuel stations have been directed not to provide petrol to those without a helmet. A directive in this regard was issued by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday.Deputy transport commissioner E Meera Prasad said that as many as 46,431 cases were registered till date against those violating the helmet norm. In 2016, 258 fatal accidents involving motorcycles were reported in the district, while the accident ratio reduced by -7.04 per cent (239 accidents).
