Online stalkers to be tried under Nirbhaya Act

VIJAYAWADA:  “People harassing women on phone or through any digital platform will be tried under the Nirbhaya Act,” said Vijayawada DCP Gajarao Bhupal, while addressing a two-day workshop organised by the State Women Commission in collaboration with National Women commission.tBhupal said that the youth is misusing technology, and instructed women to maintain distance from their Facebook and WhatsApp contacts they do not know. 

State Women Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari said that the commission will work towards implementing the act. “Every woman must come forward and speak up against harassment. We are ready to support them, we’ll  ensure justice for them. Advocates should also be proactive and support victims who file cases against harassment. Police officials, too, should take immediate action in such cases.”

Rajakumari suggested setting up of one all-women Police station in all the constituencies of the state, and said that the proposals will be forwarded to the Government. Gadde Anuradha, Zilla Parishad Chairperson, opined that conferences need to be organised in rural areas to inform the village dwellers about laws pertaining to women. Women from different places, working in various professions, took part in the workshop.
