VIJAYAWADA:  Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has introduced QR code Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag for improving door-to-door waste collection monitoring system and to address shortcomings such as sanitation staff skipping houses. According to the VMC officials, Vijayawada generates as many as 550 MT of municipal solid waste (MSD) per day from 59 divisions of the city.

The VMC officials have distributed coloured bins to residents for segregating the waste; several residents and shopkeepers have been complaining about vehicles not turning up to collect waste in time. To overcome this, the civic body has proposed to fit a QR code RFID to every house to alert the collection squads and vehicles and inform them about the bins, which are uncleared.

Speaking to TNIE on Saturday, VMC chief medical officer (CMO) K Arjuna Rao said following the directions issued by the State government under GO 279, the civic body has introduced QR code RFID tag under its ambit. Disclosing the functioning details of RFID tags, he said QR code enabled system will monitor door-to-door segregation of garbage across the city.

Every individual house given a QR code RFID tag, while apartments or flats will be clubbed as a single entity with a common QR code, he added.

The CMO said sanitary staff, who visit their respective divisions, will scan the QR code with a reader, record the data, including quantum of collection, date and time of collection and household coverage. Every day, the system will generate data such as the number of houses covered and those failed to hand over waste and update the Command Control Centre at VMC office for follow-up action, he said.

“The civic body has been spending around `five to `six lakh for each division to install the QR code RFID tags. At present, the installation works were completed in majority of the residential localities and it may take at least a month to cover all the 59 divisions of the city,’’ Rao said.
