Sean Kingston, the ‘Beautiful Girl’ guy

I have made a mark for myself but I have a long way to go. I just hope that I continue to make people enjoy my music.

He is barely 20. But he is a name that stayed on the US Billboard charts for three continuous weeks. Nevertheless, the Beautiful Girls hit-maker says he has a long way to go. On his visit to India, performing at The Hard Rock Cafe for the Bacardi tour, the young man opens up his heart to Expresso .

Though he cautiously evades the question whether he is waiting for Lil Wayne to be released from prison so that he can work with him on the lead single for his third album, the young man talks about fame, money and ‘his’ beautiful girl.

How did you like performing in India?

I did not really know what to expect when I came here, but knew it’s a very exciting country and I am very delighted on my first visit here. I had heard so much about the food here and I have immensely enjoyed my stay here till now. And I love Indian girls. They are very beautiful. I look forward to meeting my fans and having good shows in India with everyone dancing on my songs and enjoying themselves. It’s the greatest reward for an artist.

Did you get a chance to listen to some Indian music?

My producers play a lot of Bollywood songs back in the US and I have heard a lot about it. I have not had a chance to listen to it though.

At the age of 20, what do you think you have achieved in terms of music?

I have made a mark for myself but I have a long way to go. I just hope that I continue to make people enjoy my music.

Growing up, did you ever think about an alternate career? Or did you always know that music was your calling?

My initial fear was that people would not adapt to the blend of reggae and pop music and like the same. I thought I may get into bad business deals as I was extremely new to the industry. Music was always what I wanted to do. I want to branch out into acting, producing and also get more artists to feature in my record label.

When you released 'Beautiful girls', did you expect it reach the number one spot on the US Billboard top 100 list?

Not Really. I had no idea that people would love the song and my music so much. When I compose, I do not think about its success or failure. I just want to give it my best shot and leave the rest to my listeners and God. I am really happy for the success that I have got at such a young age.

Who is ‘your’ beautiful girl?

Right now it’s my mother.

How was it working with Justin Bieber for the single 'Eenie Meenie'?

Justin is a very talented guy. Collaborating with him felt right so I did it. We have been touring together and he is a great guy.

Is your third album taking time because you are waiting for Lil Wayne to be released from prison?

The album is still untitled but is ready to be released this November and it is gonna have tempo-club music.

Who are the singers that you look up to?

I would love to collaborate with Jay Z and Kanye West. I’m a huge fan of Bob Marley. I have grown up listening to Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill.

Do you think that a lot of young singers these days have lost their childhood to fame and money?

I think it is more about doing what you love and are passionate about rather than the money. For me, with all the music and the travelling, I am living my dream.
