MUMBAI — After about three years of redefining comedy on television, Kapil Sharma is now set to end his show “Comedy Nights With Kapil” with the last episode to be aired Jan. 17 on Aap Ka Colors.

Sharma and his team made this (painful?) decision after what they considered the channel’s step-motherly treatment of their show after “Comedy Nights Bachao” began and was progressively promoted more. An insider revealed to the media that the new show was to be called “Roast” earlier, but it ended up as a deliberate clone in every sense — from the name that led audiences to confuse one with the other, and with the content and even the celebrities being the same.

Sharma stated that they had planned to go off the air in December, but the channel did not have a ready replacement. As Sharma said, “Celebrities who readily agreed to come on our show were told that they would have to make an appearance on the other show as well. Every channel wants hit shows, but not at the cost of sabotaging an established one.”

We agree.
