HYDERABAD: Due to heavy inflow of water from the adjoining Mir Alam Tank, the 100-acre Safari park in Nehru Zoological Park was temporarily shut down on Tuesday. Mir Alam received 13.5 cm rainfall on Monday evening and has resulted in the tank filling up to the brim and thus resulting in water from the tank overflowing into the Safari Park complex, Sinjogi and other ponds and even the moats surrounding animal enclosures. Officials said the polluted water from the Mir Alam Tank entering the zoo premises was a cause of concern.

J Murlidhar, assistant curator Nehru Zoological Park said floodwater from Mir Alam Tank is entering the complex and it can pose a grave threat to animals in the Safari Park. “We have decided to close the Safari park for at least another one week,” he said.“Animals cannot be let free in the Safari as there are high chances of them consuming the contaminated floodwater and falling sick. Flood water is still stagnated in the Safari zone,” he said.

Heavy rush
The stubborn rains proved to be futile when it comes to stopping animal-lovers from visiting the Zoo. The zoo received footfall of nearly 10,000 on Tuesday.
