Being a representative of the people, to what extent should a politician go to save his constituency people? Well, a Mizoram MLA Dr K Beichhua has gone to the extent of carrying out an emergency operation on a woman from his constituency.

According to the Hindustan Times, an MBBS graduate from Regional Medical College in Imphal, Dr K Beichhua decided to perform the operation on a woman who was suffering from severe abdominal pain and required immediate surgery after he came to know that the surgeon at Saiha district hospital was away to attend a training programme in Impal.

"I was informed that a 35-year old woman was suffering from severe abdominal pain and needed to be operated on immediately. The woman’s stomach had a large perforation (hole) and if the operation had not been performed, she may have died," he was quoted as saying by the website.

He said that though he had performed hundreds of operations throughout his medical career, the last time he had handled a scalpel was way back in 2013 before he was elected as MLA of Saiha constituency.

The patient is said to be doing well now and was in good spirits when Dr Beichhu visited her on Thursday, the report said.

The 52-year-old doctor-turned-politician graduated in 1991 and practised medicine for around 20 years before he joined the Mizo National Front (MNF) in 2013.

In 2013, he won the election defeating the sitting Congress MLA S Hiato by 222 votes.
