NEW DELHI: Across India, a total of 7,190 cases of stalking were recorded as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. Maharashtra recorded the highest numbers with 1,587 cases of stalking while the national capital being the third highest recorded 835 such cases. Recently, a by the Thomson Reuters Foundation calling India the most unsafe country for women was published.

However, the Women and Child Development Ministry dismissed the survey as "clearly inaccurate", saying it was based on the perception of "unknown persons" and it has used a flawed methodology to arrive at the conclusion. The survey asked respondents which five of the 193 UN member states they thought were most dangerous for women and which country was worst in terms of healthcare, economic resources, cultural or traditional practices, sexual violence and harassment, non-sexual violence and human trafficking.

"Violence against women in India has caused national and international outrage and protests since the 2012 gangrape and murder of a student on a bus in New Delhi," the report said.

India scored worse than Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan and Somalia.
