Wanted criminal arrested after encounter in Gorakhpur

Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted two bike-borne suspects near Raipur village but they tried to escape towards the jungle after opening fire on police in which one constable was injured.

GORAKHPUR: A wanted criminal, carrying a reward of Rs 25,000, was arrested after an encounter in Capiyerganj area, police said here on Wednesday.

Police sources said that acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted two motorbike-borne suspects near Raipur village but they tried to escape towards the jungle after opening fire on police in which one constable was injured.

In retaliatory firing, one criminal was injured while the other managed to flee.

The injured criminal was identified as Rajan Tewari.

One country-made pistol with some cartridges were recovered from him.

Both-- the injured constable and criminal-- were shifted to Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital.

Several criminal cases under charges of loot and murder were registered against Rajan and a reward of Rs 25,000 was announced on his arrest.
