LAKSHMESHWAR(GADAG): Police Sub-Inspector Devanand S and his vehicle driver have been suspended from service, Superintendent of Police Santoshbabu K told Express.

Tension prevailed in Lakshmeshwar after a group of people vandalised and set ablaze a police station on Sunday morning alleging the lockup death of truck driver Shivanand Ganiger. They alleged that the PSI had thrashed Ganiger in the station. Additional forces have been deployed in the town and prohibitory orders clamped.

Ruling out custodial death, Santhoshbabu admitted that there was some confusion about the incident. He said the staff had claimed that they did not take Ganiger into custody as he had escaped after stopping the lorry. A judicial inquest is being done to see whether there were any injury marks on the body. “The reasons for death will be known after we receive the autopsy report,” he said.
A case has been filed against PSI Devanand and also five cases against those who indulged in arson at the police station, he said.
