Sattvic Life is the Greatest

When we entertain predominantly sattvic qualities in life, the results are far-reaching.

Brahmacharini Sharanya Chaitanya

When we entertain predominantly sattvic qualities in life, the results are far-reaching. The ones who do so are the knowers of the truth, live that knowledge all their life, and are endowed with clarity of perception. Clear vision means seeing everything as it is and not as we wish to see it.

They destroy all their sins in the process of creating a sattvic state of mind and are free of sorrow, too. On leaving the body at the time of death, they reach higher realms of experience and fashion their future lives according to their choice.

Their minds acquire powers such as lordship over all beings, the power of attraction, being very subtle and light of nature. They fashion their lives in such a way to match that of the gods themselves.

People with a sattvic disposition have their thoughts trained to a higher reality, and they have the godly touch in what they do with an ability to modify situations to suit their need. They reach a very divine state of existence. They get whatever they wish and enjoy them too. The Brahmana says that these are states of being and achievements that a person with predominantly sattvic qualities attains. “Knowing this, may you also attain whatever you please, conforming to these rules of living,” Brahmaji tells the rishis, who pose questions to him about the three qualities.

The qualities of sattva, rajas and tamas were mentioned in detail so that people would strive to attain a pure state of living through cultivating the required qualities and at the same time not be attached to them too.

Even though the different qualities of the three modes of existence have been enumerated in detail, it is difficult to separate them from one another as they are thoroughly interdependent. As long as sattva exists, there will be rajas and as long as these two exist, there will be tamas. They move together as one unit, wherever they go.

There is, however, an increase and decrease in the manifestation of these qualities. When tamas or ignorance to the existence of a thoughtful life is on the higher side, the being exists in the world as an animal. In such a creature, the dynamic power to express its will is very feeble and the quality of goodness is weaker still.

Where rajas or dynamic power is on the ascendancy, such creatures live a life in a middle plane of existence which is not too dull and inert, and not too brilliant either. The qualities of ignorance and dynamism is very minimal in such beings. It is an innate goodness that creates thought modifications that take a person to a higher plane of existence. There is no greater way of existence other than leading a life of sattvic qualities, says Brahmaji to the rishis.
