Shreya Ghoshal Mistress of Music

Ravi Shankar

Shreya Ghoshal is to the new generation of Bollywood music lovers what Lata Mangeshkar is to the old. Her Bollywood singing career started with the SRK-starrer Devdas, for which she received a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer.

Her break came after Sanjay Leela Bhansali heard the voice of the girl who would spend hours practicing in the corridors of Mahalaxmi studios before her turn came for the popular Sa Re Ga Ma singing contest. Since then Ghoshal has won laurels—in Ohio, June 26 was declared ‘Shreya Ghoshal Day’. She is truly Made in India—singing in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Assamese, Gujarati, Marathi, Odia and Punjabi. Her slogan: today’s synthetic music, manipulated by technology, cannot beat the classical music of old times.
