NEW DELHI: He gave a new identity to the Indian rupee. And he is thrilled with his achievement. "I am very happy that my symbol has been selected," said D Udaya Kumar, soon after the news of his achievement came in. But something that he really missed on this day was his family. "My family would be happy. But everybody wants to know about the symbol," Kumar said.

Interestingly, Kumar has used Devanagari script to symbolise the Indian rupee. "I thought I had an edge as Indian script was used," said Kumar.

Explaining the symbol, Kumar said his design was based on the Tricolour with two lines at the top and white space in between. "I wanted the symbol to represent the Indian flag. It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters: a capital 'R', and Devanagari 'Ra', which represent rupiya," he said.
