A research scholar at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his hostel room in Varanasi, police said Thursday.

The deceased, Rahul Prajapat, was a research scholar at the Chemisty department. He was staying at the Aiyyer hostel and was found dead by his colleagues late Wednesday.

Police said the student appeared to have committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance as he was frothing from the mouth when his body was discovered.

Prajapat was from the neighbouring Jaunpur district. His hostel mates told the police that he was keeping to himself for the last few days and apparently looked disturbed and depressed.

He was also undergoing some treatment for a brain disease.

Prajapat was alone in his room as his room partner had gone home two days back.

His body has been sent for a post-mortem examination and his parents have been informed, police said. No suicide note was recovered from the room.
