CHANDIGARH: Three days after six inmates escaped from the high-security Nabha jail, two inmates in Karnal jail today tried to kill Syed Abdul Karim alias Tunda of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Sources said Tunda was attacked by two inmates Joginder and Amandeep in Karnal jail. They tried to strangle him but the quick reaction of jail staff saved Tunda’s life. Both the accused inmates belong to Panipat.

The alleged accused were having tea with Tunda this morning when they suddenly attacked him.  After the incident, Tunda was put under increased security; local police too reached the jail.

Tunda was taken to the trauma centre for a medical check-up after which jail authorities said he was fine.

Confirming the incident, jail superintendent Sher Singh said a case had been registered against the two inmates.

Tunda was to be produced in a Panipat Court on December 1. He was sent to Karnal jail on Tuesday by a Panipat court in connection with a bomb blast in a private bus in Panipat on February 1, 1997, which
killed a 10-year-old child and injured others. He has been accused of masterminding several bombings in the country.
