NEW DELHI: Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday reviewed the internal security and law and order situation in Haryana and adjoining areas, and Jammu & Kashmir in particular with the top security brass of the country including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
“The situation in Haryana was assessed at present to be under control, though it is being carefully monitored. The home minister took note of the assurance of DGP, Haryana that the law and order situation in Haryana would be kept in control,” the Home Ministry said in a statement after the high level meeting at Singh’s residence here.
The meeting was chaired following the deaths of 31 people in Haryana on Friday after violence erupted in the state following the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief. Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi refused to blame the Haryana government for failure in controlling the situation despite Intelligence alerts. Mehrishi and Intelligence Bureau chief Rajiv Jain gave detailed presentations on the violence in Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, officials said.
Besides Doval, chiefs of Central paramilitary forces were also present during the meeting chaired by Singh. About 20,000 paramilitary forces have been provided to Haryana but they were also not utilised properly by the State administration, sources in the CRPF said. Through the presentations, Singh was told that situation in Panchkula and Sirsa continued to be “very tense”. The situation in other districts of the State “tense but under control”, officials told Singh.
