Himachal minister and scion of Kullu Royal family Karan Singh dies

Himachal Ayurveda Minister Karan Singh passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi early today after a brief illness.

CHANDIGARH: A scion of the Kullu Royal family, the Himachal government lost its 59-year-old Ayurveda minister Karan Singh on Thursday night, at AIIMS in Delhi where he was undergoing treatment since April.

The three-time MLA, Singh was suffering from a lung and liver ailment and will be cremated at Kullu on Friday. Five years ago, he lost his elder son in a road accident and is survived by his wife and younger son.

A former BJP leader who had joined the Congress, Singh was elected as an MLA from the Banjar assembly constituency in 1990, 1998 (on a BJP ticket) and was primary education minister. He was younger brother to BJP leader and former Raja of Kullu, Maheshwar Singh.

He joined the Congress in 2012 and was elected again from the same constituency, and was inducted as a minister in the present Congress government in August 2015.
