KOLKATA: Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das is mooting to write a letter to Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi apprising him of difficulties in performing his duties after students have put him under an ongoing gherao for more than 24 hours since Wednesday evening.

Students have put him under gherao after agitation heightened in the university when the Executive Committee of the university did away with entrance exam for undergraduate arts faculty on Wednesday making only Class XII marks necessary for admission into the six arts subjects offered by the university for this academic year.

However, amid the pandemonium, the university admission committee declared that admissions to the six graduation subjects English, Comparative Literature, History, Bengali, Political Science and Philosophy would be held on July 27, 28, 29 and 30 and applications will begin from Friday onwards.

The university administration claimed that the move to do away with entrance examinations was done to bring uniformity in admission process as students are admitted to science courses only on basis of their Class XII marks.

However, the students feel that the move was aimed to bring in Trinamool Congress youth cadres into the Leftist bastion university where the ruling party has little presence. The agitation started a week ago after a section of teachers questioned the legality of entrance examinations and also the legal rights of the arts professors to conduct the entrance examinations.
