PANAJI: Goa Governor Mridula Sinha on Saturday administered pledge to 9,000 passing out students of Goa University not to break-up marriages over trial issues, keep off from drugs, save women in distress and not to send parents to old age home.
The Governor administered the pledge during the 30th annual convocation of the university in the presence of President Ram Nath Kovind, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Goa University Vice-Chancellor Varun Sinha, among others.
"A marriage is not compulsory, but necessary. Once married, you will not break the relationship for small reasons. You will strive to make the marriage lasting and happy. You will strive for mutual respect for each other. There is time, but such a time will come," the Governor said and stressed the need for pre-marital counseling for students at the university premises itself.
"Pre-marriage counseling is a necessity now. Youngsters need to know the art of making families work. If they have any doubts they should get answers, so that there is longevity in marriages. At any time where you see an atrocity against the girl or a woman, you shall strive to rescue her at the cost of your life.
This is critical for the protection of Indian culture.
It is a very important pledge and I am happy that everyone is supporting it and taking a pledge," she said and asked the students not to litter nor to allow others to do so.
