Maharashtra farmer sets his own pyre and commits suicide in field

The victim had taken some private loans for sowing in this season, but the rains disappeared and he was worried that the dry spell may extend and burn his crop this year too.

MUMBAI: A young farmer Gajanan Jaybhaye from Buldana district in eastern Vidarbha committed suicide by consuming insecticide and setting himself on fire by riding wooden pyre in his own farm.

Gajanan Jaybhaye (35) from Savkhed Tejan village in Sindkhed Raja taluka of Buldana district had three acres of land. He had taken a loan of Rs 70,000 from the Maharashtra bank, which he couldn't repay due to drought. Also, as his loan wasn't waived off, he couldn't get new loan and hence he was under depression. He had taken some private loans for sowing in this season but, the rains disappeared and he was worried that the dry spell may extend and burn his crop this year too, and in the fit, he committed suicide, Gajanan's father Arjun Jaybhaye has said.

Gajanan's other relative Dnyaneshwar Jaybhaye reported the incident to the police. Gajanan had left home to go to the field on Sunday morning. He had carried with him a bottle of insecticide and a can of kerosene for spraying it. However, when Arjun reached the field later in the morning, he found that Gajanan had gathered wood from the field, set his own pyre and had burnt himself after consuming the insecticide, Dnyaneshwar has said in his complaint registered at the police station.

Gajanan is survived by his wife and a five-year-old son, the report said. Gajanan's clothes, kerosene can and an empty bottle of insecticide have been collected from the site and the investigation is on, Santosh Nemnar from Sindkhed Raja police station has said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis CM Devendra Fadnavis appealed bankers to speed up disbursement of loans under various schemes to farmers and take the initiative to branch level. He also instructed the district collectors to coordinate with the banks to ensure that loans are disbursed in time.
