NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday summoned Iranian ambassador Ali Chegeni to lodge a protest over Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif’s comments on the Delhi violence.“The Iranian Ambassador in Delhi was summoned on Tuesday and a strong protest was lodged over the comments made by Javad Zarif on a matter internal to India,” a source said.

Zarif on Monday took to Twitter and urged Indian authorities not to let senseless violence take over. “For centuries, Iran has been a friend of India. We urge Indian authorities to ensure the well-being of All Indians and not let senseless thuggery prevail. Path forward lies in peaceful dialogue and rule of law,” he had tweeted and also said Iran condemns the organised violence against Indian Muslims.

Violence broke out in the national capital on February 24 during US President Donald Trump’s two-day visit to India. Over 45 people have died in the clashes that took place in north east Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs last week had asked international leaders and bodies not to make irresponsible comments during sensitive times.
