GUWAHATI: Unidentified assailants fired upon a 30-year-old fashion designer in Manipur, leaving him injured. The person, Laishram Kumarjit, was injured in the leg. He was rushed to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

The attack was carried out near Khumbong Public Health Centre under Patsoi police station in Imphal West district. The motive behind the attack was not known. The police said they were probing the case. According to local media reports, the attack was carried out by an insurgent group for the fashion designer’s alleged involvement in “immoral” activities.

The reports said Kumarjit was picked up from somewhere on Friday night and shot at on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, 34 insurgents, believed to be from the United National Liberation Front (P), surrendered before Assam Rifles authorities along with arms and ammunition near the India-Myanmar border.

The insurgents were trying to sneak into Manipur after fleeing an attack in civil war-torn Myanmar. But when the personnel of the Assam Rifles deployed on the border challenged them, they chose to surrender. Defence sources said all 34 of them were handed over to the police for follow-up actions. The UNLF (P) signed a ceasefire agreement with the government last year. Several extremist groups from the Northeast, whether or not in a ceasefire with the government, have their camps in Myanmar.
