NEW DELHI: In a significant initiative aimed at strengthening public trust and accountability, Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar is holding daily “jansunvai” (public grievance hearings) at the state police headquarters, where people from across the state arrive each day seeking police assistance to resolve their problems.

At the centre of the initiative is the DGP himself, who personally meets members of the public and listens to their complaints. This marks the first time in the state police department that a serving police chief has undertaken such direct and regular public interaction to address grievances since assuming charge.

Senior officials said the move reflects a renewed commitment to responsive and people-centric policing.

A robust monitoring mechanism has been put in place to ensure follow-up action. Complaints received during the “jansunvai” are documented and forwarded by the DGP’s office to the concerned district and departmental officers. Progress is closely tracked to ensure timely and effective resolution, officials added.

Senior officials said the move reflects a renewed commitment to responsive and people-centric policing.

The DGP, widely regarded as a sharp and upright officer, brings with him an academic background from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and extensive experience in scientific investigation methods.

During his earlier tenure in the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), he played a key role in strengthening investigative standards and focusing on securing convictions in cases where charge sheets had already been filed.

His emphasis on scientific, evidence-based investigations and accountability is credited with contributing to a marked improvement in law and order during that period.

As some senior police officials told this newspaper, the current initiative builds on that legacy by making the police leadership more accessible to ordinary citizens.

Sohan Kumar, a member of the public who met the DGP and got a problem resolved that he had allegedly been facing for a year, hailed the Bihar DGP’s effort, describing it as a concrete step towards transparent governance and effective policing in the state.
