DHENKANAL:A day after a 50-year-old farmer of Beltikiri village under Sadar block of the district committed suicide by hanging in his house, the district administration on Thursday conducted a joint inquiry into the incident.

Sources said Aswini Sahoo allegedly took the extreme step after failing to repay the loan borrowed from different sources for farming and crop damage due to lack of irrigation facilities.The joint inquiry team comprising Dhenkanal Sub-Collector Abanikant Patnaik, Sadar Tehsildar Saroj Kumar Panda, District Agriculture Officer Gunanidhi Behera, Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Society and Sadar police rushed to the village and interacted with Sahoo's family members. They also verified the bank documents to ascertain the details of crop loan availed by Sahoo.

During verification, it was found that Sahoo and his wife had availed `74,000 crop loan from bank and other debts from private sources to cultivate paddy in around one acre of land. The Tehsiladar said a report will be submitted to the Collector by Friday.
