CHENNAI: Barring cricket, most sports in India need a bit of promotion to capture the imagination of the youth. Spectator interest is important to bring in new sponsorship, which, in turn, is vital for a sport’s growth.
The Indian squash federation chose to have a few major events at the Express Avenue Mall and also at a ground opposite the Marina beach, to promote the sport among the youth.
That this initiative was a success prompted organisers of the Table Tennis Super League -Tamil Nadu (TTSL) to hold its inaugural edition at the Forum Vijaya Mall, Vadapalani, from November 24 to 26.
“We have a cue from squash and have decided to have the TT league in the open at the Forum Vijaya Mall. We have a good structure and some dedicated people running academies all over the city and the state. But when a league of this size, along the lines of the TNPL, is watched by many people, it will inspire children to take up the sport,’’ said J Selva Kumar, secretary of the Chennai District Table Tennis Association, who is part of the league’s organising committee.
On Thursday, the league’s logo, jersey and trophy were unveiled by Bharat Joshi, British Deputy High Commissioner, and Chennaiyin FC co-owners Vita Dani and Abhishek Bachchan. Five-time former national champion and coach V Chandrasekhar was also honoured.
“The league is a good initiative. It is an excellent opportunity for youngsters to prove their mettle on a big stage. Money may not be big as in the other leagues, but this is only the beginning. As the league grows, it will certainly bring in more talent and money. I welcome the decision by the Tamil Nadu Table Tennis Association to have a league of their own,’’ opined Chandrasekhar.
Coach Srinivasa Rao, in charge of the Mobie Chargers, believes the league will add to the players’ learning curve.
“It is a good initiative. The league is such that all teams are strong. In our team, the juniors and veterans are good. The league will test the players’ skills, stamina and endurance. The format will prepare the boys for the all-India league, where they may meet foreign players,’’ said Rao, who is also Indian paddler Sharath Kamal’s father.
