THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 11th Inter-Institutional National Carrom Championship will be held at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium here from June 2 to 5.
Eighteen teams including RBI, LIC, NABARD, Indian Airlines, PSCB, Indian Audit, Postal and VSSC will compete in the four-day tournament. Events will be held in team, singles and doubles events in both the men’s and women’s section.
In the men’s event, world champion Yogesh Pardeshi of PSCB and world number 2 A Natarajan of Indian Airlines will be seen in action while world no.1 Rashmi Kumari (BSNL) and world no. 2 Nirmala (LIC) will compete in the women’s section.
Anis, Hanan in U-13 team
Kozhikode: Defender Anis K and forward Hanan Javed Nellikkavil of the Kozhikode based Sports Education Promotion Trust have been selected to the national under-13 football team. The team left Kolkata on Saturday to participate in AFC Under-13 Boys Festival of Football, South Asian Region, to be held from May 17 to 24 in Tehran. Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal and hosts Iran are the other participating countries in the festival. Former international stars Jo Paul Anchery and Feroz Sheriff will accompany the team as manager and goalkeeping coach respectively.
Chess tourney
Thrissur: The third Thrissur Open all India FIDE-rated chess tournament will be held at the Lakshmi Mandapam in Thrissur from May 19 to 24. In the 10-round tournament organised by the Thrissur Chess Association and the Y’s Men Club -Thrissur City, over 250 players including International Masters R R Laxman, K Ratnakaran, B T Murali Krishnan, P D S Girinath and Saptarshi Roy are expected to participate. The winner will take home Rs 20,000.
