CWG: 16 countries hoist national flags

NEW DELHI: Kenya, Namibia, Papua New Guinea and Northern Ireland were among the 16 countries who hoisted their national flags at the Commonwealth Games Village here today.

The flags were raised by National Cadet Corps volunteers while their respective national anthems were also rendered and replicas of the Queen's Baton were presented to members of the contingents.

Students from various city schools performed cultural programmes, including traditional dance, on the occasion.

The other nations to hoist their flags were Falkland Islands, St Lucia, Botswana, St Helena, Nauru, Gambia, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Jamaica, Bermuda and Uganda.

Contingents were welcomed by Village Mayor Dalbir Singh, the Games mascot Shera and the volunteers.

Delegates were presented with a traditional Indian stole (Angavastra) on the occasion. The contingents were headed by their respective Chefs de Mission.
