No hanging in state in last 36 years

Andhra Pradesh has not witnessed a hanging for the last 36 years. The last hanging was of Nambi Kishtappa in the Rajahmundry Central Prison in February 1976.

Thirty-two in the central prison at Secunderabad, 47 in Rajahmundry and 14 in Visakhapatnam.

Out of the total 47 executions in the Rajahmundry central prison from 1947 to 76, five were hanged in 1948, two in 1949, three in 1956, one in 1957, eight in 1959, two in 1961, four in 1962, seven in 1963, five in 1964, three in 1967, one in 1968, three in 1971, one each in 1972, 1974 and 1976.

As many as 12 convicts were executed in 1963, the highest number in the state since 1947.
