VIJAYAWADA: In a suspected case of honour killing, a mother murdered her 17-year-old daughter by smothering her to death with a pillow at their residence in VAMBAY Colony in Vijayawada on Tuesday night.

The accused Bibi Jaan was enraged over her daughter Sheik Nazma's love affair with their neighbour Deepak. The issue came to light after Deepak approached the police on Wednesday night.

The police said that Bibi Jaan and her husband Mysore Jaan migrated to the city along with their daughter Nazma from Khammam district for the latter's education. However, Nazma fell in love with their neighbour Deepak and she had frequent quarrels with her parents over this issue. "Bibi Jaan and Mysore Jaan were opposed to the relationship of their daughter with Deepak who belongs to another community," the police said.

Following a similar argument on Tuesday night, Bibi Jaan got angered and she smothered Nazma to death using a pillow while the latter was deep asleep. In the early morning, she informed her relatives from Kanchikacherla of Krishna district that her daughter died due to severe stomach pain and managed to shift the body in Kanchikacherla for burial.

Noticing this, Deepak got suspicious and informed the police who in turn took Bibi Jaan into custody for questioning. The police got the body exhumed and sent for postmortem.
