East Coast Railway to install bio-toilets in all trains by 2019

Facility already installed in 285 coaches of trains originating from Vizag

VISAKHAPATNAM : As many as 285 coaches of the total 850 coaches of various trains originating from Visakhapatnam have been installed with bio-toilets by the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway zone. “Our target is to fit bio-toilets in all coaches of all trains by 2019,” senior CDO of East Coast Railway SM Shakeel Ahmad told Express.

The ECoR zone has by far, fitted 509 out of 2,200 coaches with bio-toilets and 600 more will be equipped with bio-toilets soon.

“We have set up bio-toilets in all the coaches of four trains namely, Visakhapatnam-LTT, Visakhapatnam-Gandhidham Express, Visakhapatnam-Amritsar Express and Visakhapatnam-Secunderabad train. A few of the trains have 30 per cent coaches with bio-toilets. Now that it is a continuous process, we will install bio-toilets in 25 coaches every month,” said senior CDO of East Coast Railway SM Shakeel Ahmad. “Our target is to fit bio-toilets in all coaches of all trains by 2019,” he added. The bio-toilets are designed by Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior. Railways have decided to provide 17,000 bio-toilets on trains and additional toilets at 475 stations before the closure of the 2016-17 financial year.
