VIJAYAWADA: The State Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department confirmed on Sunday that the acute diarrhoea outbreak in Vuyyuru municipality, Krishna district, is fully under control. A preliminary report to Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar Yadav said 19 cases were detected between August 19 and 23 in Wards 5, 7 and 9.
Fifteen patients were admitted to the Vuyyuru Community Health Centre, six were discharged, and nine are still under care. Four others received outpatient treatment. Officials confirmed all patients are stable and no casualties occurred. On the minister’s directions, a high-level medical team conducted field assessments.
The team included Dr K Arjuna Rao, Dr PL Dayakar and Dr AV Seshu Kumar, joined by a Rapid Response Team from Siddhartha Medical College with specialists in paediatrics, microbiology and preventive medicine. Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare Hari Kiran instructed officials to maintain strict surveillance until the situation normalises.
The outbreak was confined to three wards, beginning with an index case in Sri Lanka Colony on August 19.
Ten surveillance teams screened households, noting that most patients were aged 40–60 and that there was no evidence of spread to neighbouring villages.
Officials dispatched 29 water samples and stool samples for testing. Residents reported changes in water quality, while some affected individuals had consumed outside food.
Medical teams suspect contamination from community water sources combined with food intake, with final causes pending lab results.
Authorities initiated chlorination of local water sources, deployed tankers to supply safe drinking water and set up two medical camps distributing ORS packets and zinc tablets.
Senior medical teams, ANMs and ASHA workers remain on duty for household surveillance and patient care.
