KARWAR,: The first phase development works of the Karwar Naval Base would be completed by March 2011, said Commodore Rajiv Jaswal, officer incharge of the base.

He told reporters on Thursday that phase II development of the base was yet to get the green signal from the Cabinet sub committee for Defence.

The detailed project report is at the Navy headquarters, he said, refusing to divulge details. He clarified that no additional land would be acquired for the second phase development.

“Expansion is inevitable to protect the maritime routes of the country.

Although modern warfare system had undergone a sea change in the world with the introduction of intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear submarines, the shore-based installations need to be strengthened to protect our 7,500 km long coastline,” he said.
