BANGALORE: Raichur, one of the hottest districts of Karnataka, this year has broken a 119-year-record for being the coldest.

The minimum temperature recorded in Raichur as on December 19 was 7.3 degree Celsius, as against the previous all-time low of 9.8 degree Celsius in 1881.

Another hot bed, Bijapur, also broke a record of having the lowest normal temperature in December. It recorded a minimum temperature of 6 degrees.

As per the observations of the state Metrological Department, several parts of north Karnataka have been under a spell of cold waves.

Meteorologists, however, say there is nothing unusual about the change and call it a 'normal winter phenomena'.

"During winter, there is a shift in the movement of the sun, due to which the winter temperatures drop, and we have longer nights and shorter days," said B Puttana, director, Bangalore Meteorological Centre.

Other districts like Gadag and Gulbarga have recorded a drop in the minimum temperature.

In Gulgarga, the average minimum temperature dropped by 6 degrees and touched as low as 9.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday, while Gadag noted a 4 degree negative slump with the minimum temperature dropping to 11.8 degree Celsius.

Bangalore recorded a temperature of 14.3 degree Celsius, which was a 2 degree drop from the average normal December temperature.

Over the next few days, while dry spells that could give rise to cold waves will prevail in north Karnataka, light to moderate rainfall is expected in all districts of the coastal and interiors of southern regions of the state.
