BANGALORE: More than 25 notorious Dandupalya gang members were convicted of killing more that 50 people in 27 cases across the state.

A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, said all the 27 police stations where the Dandupalya gang committed murders did not enter the conviction details in the “should be registered” General Conviction Register.

According to the police manual and the Criminal Procedure Codes (CrPC) rules, a police station has to enter the details of convicted persons.

Also, the police stations are required to send finger prints of the convicted people to the Finger Print Bureau, which in turn provides an identification number for the finger print.

The police station then has to send the finger print number of the convicted person to the State Crimes Records Bureau and the National Crimes Records Bureau.

The police, in all the 27 cases — reported from in Bangalore, Mysore, Mandya, Mangalore, Hubli, Chittoor and other places — did not send the finger prints of the convicts to the bureau for identification numbers.

The police officer also said that since this was not done, the details did not reach either the state records bureau or the national bureau.

The details of the convicts are recorded at the national level as it helps to maintain records of criminals, particularly interstate criminals like the Dandupalya gang.

For seven years, more than 27 police stations in the state, including stations in Bangalore, failed to file additional chargesheets against seven members of the Dandupalya gang who were allegedly involved in more that 29 murder cases.

I f the police had prepared the chargesheets on time, all the seven accused would have been convicted by now along with the other accused.

Instead, they are in judicial custody in Parappana Agrahara Jail since 2003. These Dandupalya gang members are Krishnudu alias Krishna (29), Venkatesh alias Ramesh (37), Venkatalakshmi (32) (Wife of Venkatesh) , Chinnamma (61), Timmakka (62).
