KARWAR: Three members of a dalit family at Belehittala in Gokarna died in the last 15 days. The deceased were the sons of Nagamma Mukri, a member of Gokarna gram panchayat in Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district.

According to locals, they had BPL cards but did not get ration since April as they did not have Aadhaar numbers. Nagamma has another son. All the four sons of Nagamma were addicted to alcohol, sources said.
The family lives in a hut on a private land.

Nagamma’s daughter-in-law, who lives in her mother’s house, had asked her husband and Nagamma to enrol for Aadhaar, but they refused, sources said. Uttara Kannada deputy commissioner S S Nakul said the deaths occurred due to excessive consumption of alcohol and not because of starvation. “I have instructed Kumta assistant commissioner to send a report,” he added.
